6 Tips to Get Your Car Winter Ready

As the temperature continues to drop, we will all be rushing to get into our cars as soon as possible. If you have seat warmers, you’ve got your winter driving made! In order to minimize the time that you may be outside, here are a few tips to get you ready for a great winter of driving:

Check tire pressure regularly. Dropping temperatures cause your tires to drop about one PSI for every 10 degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature. That means you’ll need to check the state of your tire pressure more regularly and spend a bit more time with an air compressor this season. 

Switch to winter tires. If you live in an area that gets especially harsh winters, consider investing in winter tires for the season. Go the extra mile if you see it saving you some trouble when the worst of winter hits us.

Battery care is important. Not much worse than a dead battery in the height of winter. With the cold temperatures, your car’s battery’s performance can be hindered or stopped entirely. Inspect for corrosion and clean areas that it’s present if you’re comfortable with it. Avoid altogether by taking it to a trusted mechanic.

Replace old windshield wipers. Snow and ice will make its way on your windshield this winter, and over time will cause your windshield wipers to wear further with rougher use. Make your life easier this winter by replacing your windshield wipers before the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Prepare an emergency bag. A prepped emergency bag is great for peace of mind while driving this winter. Make sure you have a spare blanket, non perishable snacks, flashlight and batteries, an extra outfit, and anything else that you could see yourself needing if you’ll be camping in your car overnight. You’ll be ready for anything!

Don’t forget a snow brush and ice scraper. A snow brush and ice scraper is essential for the entire season. This will allow you to get on the road in a timely manner, rather than waiting for your car to defrost everything. Only your front and rear windshields have defrosters, so your other windows/mirrors will most definitely need a good ice scraping before hitting the road.
